Core Concepts

Smartfacts CDCM organizes configuration management through the following core concepts:

1. Space

A Space is an isolated workspace for specific teams or units. Content in a Space is segregated, ensuring independent management without overlap.

2. Configuration Area

A Configuration Area represents a project or program within a Space, organizing configuration activities into manageable groups.

3. Unit

A Unit is a configurable entity, such as a product or process, managed within Configuration Areas as the foundation of configurations.

4. Configuration

A Configuration is a versioned instance of a Unit, supporting hierarchical nesting of components to manage complex products effectively.

5. Configuration Item

Configuration Items link Configurations to versioned content:

  • Internal Work Products: Versioned instances of Units within CDCM.

  • External Work Products: References to external tools like CAD, requirements, or document systems.

These concepts enable precise and flexible configuration management across domains.
